3 tips to make an impact with display fonts

Have you ever heard the term “display font” before? ??

If you haven’t, chances are you’ve seen or used them before — and you might have been using them incorrectly ?

Display fonts are very detailed fonts. They have a lot of personality and can make a huge impact on your designs, for better or for worse… so you want to be sure you’re using them the right way.

Check out these 3 tips for using display fonts:

1. Only use display fonts for a few very large words

The first aspect of good design is legibility. When you design something, ask yourself: can someone read it without having to work hard? If the answer is no, then something needs to change.

When you use display fonts for a few very large words, you’ll get the best of both worlds: you’ll get the personality of the display font, but it will still be easily legible if it’s large enough.

2. Never use display fonts for multiple lines of text

Using a display font for multiple lines of text can be immediately overwhelming to the reader. It can be difficult to read, which means chances are, people probably won’t read it at all.

You are better off going with a display font for the title or heading, and then a simpler font for the lines of text.

3. Never use display fonts for smaller text

If your design isn’t legible, then nothing else matters… and your design will be illegible if your text is too small to read.

Stick with display fonts for a few large words to make an impact, and leave your smaller text as a simpler font (a sans serif font might work well).
