Do I have to be artistic to design well?

Do you feel like you’re not artistic and creative, and therefore you can’t design well?

Maybe you think you’re not an artist because you don’t draw or doodle much — and so the thought of creating a flier, presentation, or whatever creates anxiety for you ??

Let me let you in on a secret: you don’t have to be creative to put together great designs people care about.

In fact, the way I teach design can be broken down into a few basic ideas:

1. People can read it

This is the first step: Is your design legible? Can people actually read it?

It may seem like a no-brainer — obviously, if you’re designing something with text, it’s going to be legible, right?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of things people do in graphic design (without realizing it) that make it illegible — or unlikely someone will read it at all.

2. People understand it

The next step is getting people to understand your design.

Understanding doesn’t just mean it’s legible; it means the reader knows what you’re trying to communicate without having to read every single word.

Why is this important? If you’re walking the street and someone hands you a flier with a HUGE block of text on it, you’re probably not going to read it.

But if you use good design — with icons, bullets, headings, and so on — you’re able to quickly scan, skim, and digest the information without having to read every word.

3. People care about it

This is the last step — getting someone to care about your creation.

If you use good design to hook someone at the beginning, they’re much more likely to read the rest of your illustration.

Think of it like Walmart Vs. Target. We can find our way around both of these stores well — but we might choose to shop at Target because it looks a little nicer. It all goes back to design ?

The bottom line? Whether or not you feel artistic or not, we are all designers. We all put together fliers, business proposals, reports, and more.

We all create things, so why not create them well?

Let me introduce myself
I'm Felter, and I'm the designer that non-designers love!

Why? Because good design is the difference between your ideal person scrolling past your post or actually taking action.

I used to work the 9-5 grind in the corporate world – like I was “supposed to” – until I blew it all up to do it my own way.

Now, I help non-designers, service providers, and business owners use good design in their branding, website, and content to book more clients and make more sales!
