5 things I learned in therapy that have benefitted me as a business owner

Let me set the record straight: therapy isn’t just for major life crises like divorce or depression. It’s way more versatile than that. I started therapy way back in my mid to late twenties, way before I even dreamt of running a business.

It helped me figure out life stuff, like career decisions and relationship dynamics. And let me tell you, those insights have been invaluable on this wild entrepreneurial ride.

Lesson 1: Navigating the worry train

Therapy taught me some great techniques to manage anxiety and worry spirals. It boils down to two simple questions: “What’s the worst that could happen?” and “What can I actually control right now?”

Applying that mindset shift to business? It’s been a game-changer, helping me focus on what really matters instead of getting lost in a sea of ‘what-ifs.’

Lesson 2: Kicking guilt to the curb

Guilt used to be my productivity kryptonite. But therapy helped me see that beating myself up over not being productive enough is a dead-end street.

Instead, I’ve embraced the ‘do something’ mentality. If I don’t have the motivation to tackle the things on my to-do list, I just pick one thing and go for it. And you know what? It works like a charm.

Lesson 3: Embracing imperfection

I used to be a card-carrying perfectionist. Every project had to be flawless, or I’d consider it a total failure. But therapy showed me that perfectionism is a trap. It’s all about progress, not perfection.

In business, that means taking messy action, learning as you go, and embracing the journey—even when it’s not picture-perfect.

Lesson 4: Bouncing back from setbacks

Setbacks and disappointments are par for the course in business. But thanks to therapy, I’ve got some serious resilience in my back pocket.

Instead of wallowing in defeat, I’ve learned to pick myself up, dust myself off, and turn setbacks into opportunities for growth. It’s a game-changer, trust me.

Lesson 5: Finding validation within yourself

For the longest time, I looked for validation outside myself—whether it was Instagram likes or email opens. But therapy flipped the script on that one.

True validation comes from within, not from external achievements. By focusing on my own happiness and fulfillment, I’ve found a sense of peace that no business milestone can match.
